A Malone native and current Rensselaer County assistant district attorney will be the new Essex County Assistant Public Defender.

Robert D. Seymour will be starting in the job on March 22, Public Defender Brandon Boutelle told the Public Safety Committee of the county Board of Supervisors Monday morning. Boutelle said he received more than a dozen applications for the position, and interviewed four people in person at Albany Law School and the two finalists in Elizabethtown before making his decision.

Seymour grew up in Malone and has moved to Lake Placid. He has been involved in practicing criminal law exclusively for the past two years. Boutelle said Seymour wanted to "represent the Constitution from the other side of the game." He will make $58,000 a year.

Boutelle had been assistant public defender before, becoming public defender in January, after Livingston Hatch's death.
